A<\/span>t the time of Romanticism, the manor house of the Ch\u00e2teau des Roches belonged to Bertin l’Ain\u00e9 (1776-1841), patron of the arts and director of the magazine the Journal des D\u00e9bats<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


F<\/span>rom 1815 to 1841 Bertin’s literary salon attracted the most eminent figures in the world of politics and arts : Chateaubriand, Berlioz, Ingres, Liszt… Chateaubriand, who was a long-time friend of the Bertin family, would call on them from the Vall\u00e9e-aux-Loups.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

T<\/span>he most renowned guest was indisputably Victor Hugo, who stayed at the Ch\u00e2teau des Roches whenever he could. Hugo, along with his wife and children, would take a stage coach at the Place des Vosges (then Place Royale) to Sceaux where a connection took them to Bi\u00e8vres.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

T<\/span>hey were at home at the Ch\u00e2teau. The poet would go out alone to write or to take a walk in the green valley of the Bi\u00e8vre river, or in the woods of Verri\u00e8res. During his stays at the manor house, he wrote several poems which were published in Les Feuilles d\u2019automne<\/em>, Les Chants du cr\u00e9puscule<\/em>, Les Voix int\u00e9rieures<\/em> <\/em>and Les Rayons et les ombres<\/em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
